Obsolete parameter in Apple QuickTime makes Windows 7 exposed to attacks
A flaw found in Apple QuickTime Player can be exploited to remotely execute malicious code on Windows-based PCs, even those running the most recent versions of operating system. The bug was discovered by Ruben Santamarta of Spain-based security firm Wintercore. Before this time an unused parameter known as “_Marshaled_pUnk” remained undetected for at least nine years. The inclusion of this parameter is a backdoor because it is the work of an Apple developer who added it to the QuickTime code...

200 Windows applications have a security bug that is easy to exploit by hackers
A security researcher Acros reported this week that nearly 200 Windows applications are vulnerable to remote code-execution attacks that exploit a bug in the way the programs load binary files for the Microsoft operating system. While the critical flaw was patched in Apple's iTunes media player for Windows and VMware Tools, for other applications it will be necessary to create an individual patches, said Mitja Kolsek, CEO of application security consultancy Acros Security. He supported the...

Microsoft at last releases a patch for Windows shortcut flaw
Microsoft at last released an emergency patch for a critical vulnerability in all Windows machines that is exploited by criminals to install malware. As it promised last week Microsoft released the update outside of its normal patching schedule because the vulnerability is being actively targeted. The bug first came to the surface three weeks ago when it was being used to attack SCADA — supervisory control and data acquisition — systems that control sensitive equipment at power plants, gas...

Windows Help helps hackers get full control of your PC
Older versions of Windows are under risk of a new attack that would allow hackers to take remote control of a user’s PC. According to an advisory published Wednesday by researcher Tavis Ormandy the vulnerability is in the Windows Help and Support Center, a feature that provides users with online technical support. Hackers can exploit the bug by embedding commands in web addresses that activate the feature's remote assistance tool, which allows administrators to execute commands over the...

Turn off Aero on your Windows 7, otherwise be infected with malware
Users of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 were warned this week by Microsoft on the bug in the operating system that allows hackers to exploit it for installing malware. The vulnerability in the Canonical Display Driver may be exploited to cause vulnerable machines only to reboot, Microsoft spokesman Jerry Bryant said in a blog post. However, it can also be abused for unseen malware installation though at first attackers would have to bypass memory randomization protections baked in to...

Windows XP vulnerability makes any anti-virus vain
According to the report made last week by Matousec.com cyber criminals now can exploit the kernel driver hooks that most security software use to reroute Windows system calls through their software to check for potential malicious code before it's able to execute. The technique is called “argument switch attack” and is considered by some experts as a 'very serious' problem. 'This is definitely very serious,' said Alfred Huger, vice president of engineering at Immunet,...

According to recent data provided in the research by the security vendor Webroot 73% of the polled said Web-based threats are more difficult to manage than those coming via email. 23% of the respondents acknowledged their companies were vulnerable to attacks on web 2.0 applications including social networks such as Facebook Artwork with a quarter saying they were open to hackers that exploit Artwork. Another 24% confirmed that it was browser bugs that resulted in successful attacks. The...

Microsoft November patches cause users’ PCs to crash and go useless
On November 10 Microsoft released 15 patches for vulnerabilities in Windows, Windows Server, Excel and Word. The latest package of patches were found to cause some machines to buzz and show a black screen making thus the computer useless. The problem affects PCs running Windows 7, Vista and XP operating systems, said Mel Morris , the CEO and CTO for the U.K. security company Prevx. The problem was reported to Prevx by the users of its security software last week. The changes made by...

SSL certificates are vulnerable and can expose customers’ data
SSL, or the Secure Sockets Layer system that is widely used to protect Web traffic against data theft was found vulnerable to hacking attacks. The system that is mainly used for online banking, shopping, and any other https connection appears to have a flaw that allows an attacker to break into any theoretically secured connection and add malicious commands. A perpetrators can exploit the flaw by accessing the specific network traffic between a client, such as a Web browser, and a Web or...
