200 Windows applications have a security bug that is easy to exploit by hackers
A security researcher Acros reported this week that nearly 200 Windows applications are vulnerable to remote code-execution attacks that exploit a bug in the way the programs load binary files for the Microsoft operating system. While the critical flaw was patched in Apple's iTunes media player for Windows and VMware Tools, for other applications it will be necessary to create an individual patches, said Mitja Kolsek, CEO of application security consultancy Acros Security. He supported the...

Windows Help helps hackers get full control of your PC
Older versions of Windows are under risk of a new attack that would allow hackers to take remote control of a user’s PC. According to an advisory published Wednesday by researcher Tavis Ormandy the vulnerability is in the Windows Help and Support Center, a feature that provides users with online technical support. Hackers can exploit the bug by embedding commands in web addresses that activate the feature's remote assistance tool, which allows administrators to execute commands over the...

New cyber attack, all browsers vulnerable: open tabs lead you to identity theft
This week a Firefox creative lead Aza Raskin reported a new form of attack dubbed “tabnapping” that allows hackers to easily lure users into providing their passwords by secretly changing already-open browser tabs. It was said that all major browsers on Windows and Mac OS X are vulnerable to this kind of attack. Raskin pictured the scenario of the attack: people often leave many tabs open for long periods which makes the hacking task for the cyber crooks simple. After a user visits a...

Turn off Aero on your Windows 7, otherwise be infected with malware
Users of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 were warned this week by Microsoft on the bug in the operating system that allows hackers to exploit it for installing malware. The vulnerability in the Canonical Display Driver may be exploited to cause vulnerable machines only to reboot, Microsoft spokesman Jerry Bryant said in a blog post. However, it can also be abused for unseen malware installation though at first attackers would have to bypass memory randomization protections baked in to...

How security experts fend off users from protecting against online threats
Internet security experts who met this week to work out how to protect computer users from the growing problem of online theft, fraud, vandalism, abuse and espionage, warned that using computer jargon by the industry players leads to that users are discouraged from learning how to protect themselves against different kind of scams on the web. The language used by security researchers is usually treated as gobbledegook and makes most of online subscribers worldwide think that security is an...

A hacked Twitter account may cost as much as $1,000
Researchers at Kaspersky Lab report that hacked accounts of Twitter and other services are being sold online for hundreds of dollars. Big revenues made on stolen data make hacking programs and viruses very popular among cyber criminals. According to Kaspersky Researcher Dmitry Bestuzhev there were Gmail accounts for sale on Russian hacker forums, (asking price 2,500 roubles, or $82) RapidShare accounts going for $5 per month, as well as Skype, instant messaging and Facebook credentials on...
