Obsolete parameter in Apple QuickTime makes Windows 7 exposed to attacks
A flaw found in Apple QuickTime Player can be exploited to remotely execute malicious code on Windows-based PCs, even those running the most recent versions of operating system. The bug was discovered by Ruben Santamarta of Spain-based security firm Wintercore. Before this time an unused parameter known as “_Marshaled_pUnk” remained undetected for at least nine years. The inclusion of this parameter is a backdoor because it is the work of an Apple developer who added it to the QuickTime code...

Microsoft issues SP1 for Widows 7 and Windows Server 2008 and extends XP's life
Yesterday Microsoft has announced availability of the public beta for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1). According to Brandon LeBlanc SP1 for Windows 7 does not contain any new features specific to Windows 7. However, the new features in SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 benefit Windows 7 by providing a richer Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) experience. For Windows 7, SP1 is simply a combination of updates already available through Windows Update and additional...

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 coming this week!
This week Microsoft is hosting its own major event this week, TechEd. At TechEd, Microsoft unveiled that it is working on Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 and expects to have a public beta version available in July. SP1 represents a sort of technology rite of passage indicating an acceptable level of product maturity. So, many businesses and IT administrators don't even consider adopting a new operating system until it reaches SP1. 'SP1 will not contain any new features...

Does Windows 7 make any difference for users compared to Vista?
Microsoft has seen an increase in customer satisfaction with its operating system. Windows 7 has proved to be more successful than its predecessor Vista. The American Customer Satisfaction Index showed that Windows 7 brings more satisfaction to PC users today. 'At the beginning of 2007, when Microsoft released Windows Vista, customer satisfaction plunged 4% to an ACSI score of 70, well below the industry average, where it remained for the next three years,' reads the ASCI's...

Turn off Aero on your Windows 7, otherwise be infected with malware
Users of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 were warned this week by Microsoft on the bug in the operating system that allows hackers to exploit it for installing malware. The vulnerability in the Canonical Display Driver may be exploited to cause vulnerable machines only to reboot, Microsoft spokesman Jerry Bryant said in a blog post. However, it can also be abused for unseen malware installation though at first attackers would have to bypass memory randomization protections baked in to...

Don’t believe Windows 7 upgrade checkup in email! It’s a Trojan!
A new scam is being spread across the Internet with fraudsters distributing fake Microsoft notifications to users advising them to check if their operating systems could be upgraded to Windows 7. The software attached to the message is nothing more than a Trojan horse that infects user PC once he/she installs it. Inasmuch as users are very interested today in whether their machines could be updated to Windows 7 cyber crooks are taking advantage of the situation. They send Microsoft’s...

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 means the end of XP downgrade
The deal announced last year by Microsoft under which users could downgrade new machines bought with preinstalled Windows 7 Professional to the older Windows XP Professional comes to an end in late April 2011 or at the time when Microsoft launches Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), whichever comes first. About two months ago the Redmond company acknowledged it is working on Windows 7 Service Pack 1. However, the definite date for the release has not been specified yet. 'So the clock is...

Internet Explorer 9 Second Preview: what’s new and worth to mention
Microsoft has updated its Internet Explorer 9 preview in line with its promise to introduce updates to the app every eight weeks until releases the official public beta version of the platform. But the timetable for the release has not been specified again. 'The Platform Preview continues to be the thinnest possible wrapper around the Web platform, and as such is not intended for general purpose browsing,' cautioned Dean Hachamovich, the browser team's general manager, in an...

Windows 7 SP 1: just a bungle of torrents, better wait for Microsoft release
As Microsoft is readying the first service pack for its latest operating system Windows 7 many torrent websites are already allowing their members to download an early build of the distribution. Last month Windows team discussed the upcoming Windows 7 SP1 release in a blog post. The post said: “For Windows 7, SP1 includes only minor updates, among which are previous updates that are already delivered through Windows Update. SP1 for Windows 7 will, however, deliver an updated Remote Desktop...

Do not use Internet Explorer 9, or discard your Windows XP
Users of Windows XP will have to upgrade their operating systems to Windows 7 if they want to use new web browser by Microsoft. Internet Explorer 9 that comes next year would not support the ten years old platform. According to the reports the new browser will be heavily dependent on hardware acceleration that just isn’t possible on Windows XP. IE General Manager Dean Hachamovitch said that a “modern browser” would require “modern operating...
